Restoration

Before its restoration, Hause Hall Farm’s living accommodation was concentrated in the three-bedroom, two-reception room farmhouse. The beautiful stone barns were in limited use because of their small size and the focus on local Herdwick sheep farming which requires less stabling. The Cruik Barn structure was at risk with significant bowing out of its north and south elevations. Both have been carefully rebuilt in their original materials.

The original openings from the Cumbrian longhouse were reinstated into the Bank Barn and the large open space in the upper barn now forms the Master Bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and dressing room. The sandstone flag lower section is now a grand entranceway which leads to the main reception rooms and the Rampsgill Bedroom with an ensuite bathroom.

The significant changes in the farmhouse were exposing and restoring the original beams and ceiling lines, insulating with sheep’s wool and hemp and lime plastering throughout. Bathrooms were added by extending out under the eaves of the original roof line with conservation roof lights serving to capture and pass light through these into the main house. The heating system is based on ground-source heat pumps and the water treatment is handled within the estate grounds.
