1/1–7/1 Letters from Lowther, A Christmas Postal Trail, Lowther, Penrith, CA10 2HH

Christmas at Lowther in 2019 is based around the theme of Letters from Lowther with an emphasis on writing, corresponding, letters, letterboxes and the post.

This garden trail celebrates all of the above and shows – in charming three-dimensional detail – ways in which letters and messages have been sent across the ages. The trail will be suitable for all ages and is free with admission. A small lettery prize will be given to all who can answer the special question.

01/01-05/01 Puss In Boots, Upfront Gallery and Puppet Theatre, Upfront Gallery, Unthank, Skelton, Penrith, CA11 9TG

The Upfront Puppet Theatre Christmas production is “Puss in Boots”. The show is based on the original French fairy tale. The father of the family dies and the oldest son inherits the flour mill; the second a donkey and the youngest son, Marco, inherits a cat! BUT this is no ordinary cat. Puss has magical qualities that enable him to talk and stand on two legs. His schemes and adventures create a happy ending with Marco becoming a Prince and marrying the Princess.

The show uses long string marionettes performed from two puppeteer bridges in the roof of the theatre, specially composed music, puppets and scenery constructed in the Upfront workshops.

Time: Performances at 1:00pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm.

This is the fifth edition of our popular Great Print Exhibition, the largest exhibition of original print in the UK.

This year it’s bigger than ever, with more artists taking part and more artworks to see. Featuring over 80 artists and more than 500 artworks on the wall, and many more to browse, this exhibition brings a huge range of styles and techniques.

With prices to suit all budgets it’s a great opportunity to buy a unique Christmas gift or an artwork to treasure in your own home.

This is also the first chance to see an exhibition in our brand new gallery space!

There is a catalogue available to buy featuring all the artists in the exhibition.

11/01 Orton Farmers’ Market, Orton, near Penrith, Cumbria, CA10 3RU 

Opening times: 9.30am-2pm

Orton Farmers’ Market happens on the second Saturday of every month and includes over 25 local farmers, growers, producers and artisan craftsmen offering a tremendous variety of high quality and speciality local produce and crafts. Orton, a tranquil, attractive (and award winning) village that nestles in the heart of Eden is transformed on market day by the sights, sounds and smells of a thriving country market.

With live music at most markets, special events such as cookery demonstrations, an award winning chocolate factory on the doorstep, and parking for the disabled, a trip to the award winning Orton Farmers’ Market is a great day out for the whole family

The Rheged Centre is an award winning visitor attraction just outside Penrith on the A66.

Throughout May there are a number of events and activities taking place including;
