A traditional, informal gathering of Gypsies and Travellers. The horse fair offers a lively atmosphere with plenty to see including horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.

The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers which takes place on the first week in June, from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but this is essentially a weekend event the main days being the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Horse Fair has taken place since the reign of James II, who granted a Royal charter in 1685 allowing a horse fair “near to the River Eden.”

Appleby Fair is unique in Europe and, as well as attracting around 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day.

*Please note this is not an organised event* and visitors attend at their own risk
