Melmerby Hall: Accommodation and Features

Melmerby Hall has evolved over generations with the earliest known reference dating back to the 1300s.  The present day dining room, kitchen and rooms above this form the centre of this fortified medieval section of Melmerby and its defensive properties are evident in the meter thick sandstone walls, stone mullion windows, the ancient barrel vaulted cellars hewn out of the sandstone escarpment foundation underneath the hall and old carved doorways.  There are legends of a hidden tunnel running out from Melmerby Hall to the nearby church but we have not (yet) been able to find this passageway.

The Georgian Wing at the front of Melmerby Hall was added in the 18th century and its graceful sash windows and traditional layout of an oak-panelled gentlemans’ library with open log fire on the one side and the formal drawing room on the other echo back to this era of gracious entertainment.  The spectacular dining room still has ancient old meat hooks in the oak beams and an enormous open fire salvaged from one of the local castles and opens through an oak panelled door to the large breakfasting kitchen. The ground floor receptions are rounded off with a family living room well equipped for modern entertainment and relaxed afternoons in front of the fire.

Melmerby Hall also has a sandstone larder room, a separate utility room, boot room, back cloakroom and westerly aspect sandstone terraces leading onto the formal gardens and woodland beyond.

Note: There are horses stabled nearby so guests are kindly asked to restrict firework celebrations to 5th Nov, or New Year’s Eve. Thank you!
