Lowther Castle and Gardens, Penrith CA10 2HH

Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century, on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year. Its gardens were the envy of the north. But in 1957 the castle was demolished. Just the façade and outer walls remained standing and for over half a century, the place was empty – home only to chickens, pigs and the odd bat. The gardens were lost to wilderness.

Seventy years on from its demolition, Lowther Castle is now one of the most intriguing visitor attractions in the country. Dramatic ruins, gardens within gardens an adventure playground to rival the best in the land. For visitors young and old (and four-legged), Lowther Castle offers plenty to enjoy.

The Lost Castle – Huge Adventure Playground at Lowther Castle, Penrith CA10 2HH

Designed so that families can enjoy playing together in the great outdoors.  Built from over 18,000 metres of sustainably grown timber, the structure is an echo of Lowther Castle itself, with the addition of turrets, zipwires, walkways and slides.  Close by, you will find the ‘Into the woods’ cafe where you can buy hot and cold snacks and drinks. All in all, somewhere to enjoy a wonderful day out.

Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, Penrith CA11 0HB

“Dalemain is a house that needs to be full of people. This is as true today as it always has been and as much as it is a home to my wife, myself and our children, it is a living, working entity that is of much wider importance and interest to the many people whose lives come into contact with it in one way or another.  We love it as our home, a very special house with an extraordinarily warm and welcoming atmosphere, and it is our pleasure to share it with the many visitors and friends who chance upon it. We are home to ‘The World’s Original Marmalade Awards & Festival’ held annually in March at Dalemain”

1-27 March  The Pancake Papers, Lowther Castle and Gardens, Lowther, Penrith, CA10 2HH

In the deep of winter when spirits are in need of a boost, thoughts at Lowther turn to pancakes. And to the mysterious case of 13,000 tins of missing Maple Syrup.
The story begins: “A small girl with a large hat, a pet puffin (called Puffin) and the appetite of a lion decided she wanted to become an international celebrity. She was tired of just being a small girl. The small girl lived in Askham Village in Cumbria – very close to Lowther Castle. It was the middle of winter. What could she do?
Meanwhile at Lowther Castle itself, an incredible theft was discovered. When chefs went to the Lowther Castle Kitchen Cupboard, they found it was empty. All the Maple Syrup that they had bought in, ready for Pancake Day, had gone. Vanished. It must have been stolen.”
Find out if Miss Eleanor manages to become an international celebrity, whether or not the maple syrup is found and how Puffin, Miss Eleanor’s constant companion, comes to the rescue.
A story trail round the garden suitable for all ages. The prize at the end – a free pancake to all children who complete in the café. Free with admission to the Castle and Gardens
