Glassonby Microlight & Light Aircraft Airfield

Glassonby Microlight & Light Aircraft Airfield

Glassonby Airfield is a small airfield to the north east of Penrith. It has two grass runways, 18/36 (450m) & 05/23 (350m) and is perched on top of a hill at 600ft ASL in the Pennine foothills.

  • Location: Cumbria, GB
  • Position: N54°44.28 W002°39.12

Robin Rowley carved this airfield out of some the sheep pastures in the wake of the severe outbreak of Foot and Mouth in England in 2001 when the livestock population was decimated. These days, microlights and small aircraft occasionally share the runways with the sheep!

A recent review:

“This airfield is one of the best microlight fields I ever had the pleasure of visiting. I called Robin, 2 days before we left for Spamfield 08 and asked if we could use the airfield and to see if he could assist our fuel needs. We duly arrived on the Friday, Robin had left the fuel for us with a note to use what we need, he then turned up and let us have use of the clubhouse…. and what a clubhouse it is !….wonderful. Tea and coffee was available and after a re-fuel we had a tour of the hangars. This is a wonderful airfield and Robin is one of the nicest and friendliest blokes we had ever had the pleasure of meeting. We will be back to use this airfield again in the not too distant future. Many thanks to Robin for everything and the use of Glassonby airfield.
