Bitts Park in Carlisle is a lovely green space just under a kilometre (roughly ten minutes on foot) from the city centre—making it an ideal stop for families exploring Cumbria’s countryside charm.
This historic Victorian park, Carlisle’s first public park established in 1893, features formal lawns with flowerbeds and a striking statue of Queen Victoria at its centre.
Kids will be delighted by the fenced playground, designed for toddlers through early teens, complete with inclusive equipment like a wheelchair-accessible swing, musical play panels, and a trampoline. During warmer months (Easter to October), the splash park with spray jets and a tipping bucket is a refreshing highlight.
Active families can enjoy wide, flat walking and running routes, or let older children skate in the large skate park and try out the outdoor gym. The Hadrian’s Wall Trail traces the riverside edge of the park, inviting scenic strolls along the River Eden.
Special thanks to the team at Discover Carlisle for providing some photos of the park.
