10 Brilliant Things To Do With Your Dog in the Lake District

10 Brilliant Things To Do With Your Dog in the Lake District

Let’s be honest: holidays are better with dogs. They don’t complain about the weather, they’re thrilled by mud, and they consider a long walk followed by a nap to be the height of luxury. Which makes the Lake District, with its fells, forests, lakes and dog-welcoming pubs, pretty much paradise.

Here at The Rowley Estates, we firmly believe that dogs deserve a holiday every bit as good as yours. That’s why all of our holiday homes are proudly dog-friendly – because leaving your four-legged best friend behind just feels wrong.

So, pop the lead in the boot, pack an unreasonable number of treats, and enjoy our pick of the 10 best things to do with your dog in the Lake District.

1. Go Fell Walking (At Your Dog’s Pace)

The Lake District is basically one giant outdoor playground. Whether you’re tackling Catbells, wandering around Tarn Hows, or simply meandering up a gentle fell, your dog will be in heaven.

Pro tip: let your dog think they are in charge of navigation. They’ll proudly lead you… directly into a bog. Character building for everyone involved.

2. Paddle in a Lake (Or Five)

Derwentwater, Coniston Water, Ullswater – take your pick. Many lakes have dog-friendly access points where your pup can splash, paddle, or launch themselves in like an overexcited otter.

You, meanwhile, can enjoy the view and pretend you’re not worried about the soggy dog smell on the drive back.

3. Explore Woodland Walks

Whinlatter Forest, Grizedale, and countless hidden woodlands offer shaded paths, exciting smells, and plenty of sticks. Not your sticks. Your dog’s sticks. All of them.

Bonus points if you come home with a muddy dog and a clear conscience – after all, it’s the Lake District. It’s basically compulsory.

4. Discover Dog-Friendly Pubs (For Research Purposes)

The Lake District has mastered the art of the dog-friendly pub. Expect water bowls, treats behind the bar, and staff who greet your dog before acknowledging you exist.

After a long walk, there are few things better than a roaring fire, a decent pint, and a dog snoring gently under the table.

5. Try a Lakeside Picnic

Pack some local goodies, find a scenic spot, and enjoy lunch with a view. Your dog will help by sitting very close and staring at your sandwiches with deep emotional intensity.

Just remember: what falls on the ground belongs to the dog. It’s the law.

6. Take a Boat Trip (Yes, Really)

Several lakes offer dog-friendly boat cruises, including Ullswater and parts of Windermere. Most dogs love the breeze, the new smells, and the attention from fellow passengers.

Some may attempt to be captain. Supervise accordingly.

7. Wander Through Picture-Perfect Villages

Places like Keswick, Pooley Bridge and Glenridding are perfect for a gentle stroll, a bit of shopping, and an ice cream (for you – although your dog will strongly disagree).

Expect lots of smiles, compliments about your dog, and at least one conversation that starts with, “What breed is he?”

8. Chase Sunsets and Golden Hour Walks

Evening walks in the Lake District are something special. The crowds thin, the light turns golden, and your dog somehow finds a second wind.

It’s the perfect way to end the day before heading back to your cosy, dog-friendly holiday home at The Rowley Estates.

9. Embrace the Mud (And the Towels)

Let’s not pretend you’re leaving the Lake District with a clean dog. Embrace it. Muddy paws, wet fur, and a very content canine are all part of the experience.

Luckily, our dog-friendly holiday homes are ideal for drying off, settling in, and putting the kettle on while your dog collapses into a well-earned sleep.

10. Do Absolutely Nothing

After days of adventures, sometimes the best thing to do is… nothing at all. A lazy morning, a short wander, and an afternoon nap with your dog curled up nearby.

That’s what holidays are for.

Dog-Friendly Stays Made Easy

At The Rowley Estates, we know dogs are part of the family. That’s why all of our Lake District holiday homes are proudly dog-friendly, offering the space, comfort and location you need for a truly relaxing break – paws included.

So whether your dog loves lakes, fells, pubs, or simply snoozing after a good walk, the Lake District has it all.

And honestly? Watching your dog enjoy it might just be the best part of the holiday.
