Stag Cottage
Live in luxury at Stag Cottage enjoying its private gardens and the exquisite grounds of the Melmerby Hall Estate.
- Sleeps: 6
Calm and creature comforts in this 17th-century sandstone cottage
Just beyond the arched entrance in the high sandstone walls of the Melmerby Estate you’ll find Stag Cottage, tucked up against the Hall. (A secret, heavy, lockable oak door leads from Stag into the Hall’s butlers’ pantry so you can book the cottage separately or jointly with the Hall for larger parties.) The flagstone oak and granite kitchen’s built with muddy boots and paws in mind for relaxed lunches. Or make the most of the elegant dining room with candelit suppers and games around the antique table. Get the wood burning stove blazing, stretch out on leather sofas and oriental rugs, uncork your welcome wine and watch a film. Curl up on a padded window seat to read, dream and nibble local delicacies from your generous wicker hamper.
The historic grace and five-star comfort of Stag Cottage replenishes you, body and soul.
Enjoy privacy and freedom to roam the estate
Enjoy a sunny morning coffee and convivial barbecues on your private terrace. Head into Melmerby’s grounds for a hearty stomp down to the river through acres of ancient woodland, perfect for den and dam-building. Potter in the sundrenched walled garden, set up croquet hoops or hire targets for the archery lawn. Stroll into the village for award-winning raspberry scones from the bakery, a pint of local ale, and explore the treasure trove of antiques, toy workshop and stunning boutique clothes that are squirreled away behind its rose sandstone walls.
Unboot and reboot
After a busy day’s idling round the Estates, hills and lakes, steam aching limbs with a choice of en-suite bath or rainfall shower in bedrooms on both floors. Relax in carved beds under burnished beams and chandeliers; sink down under feather duvets wrapped in Egyptian cotton and drift into sweet dreams.
If you can bear to leave...
With the Pennines at one elbow, the Lakes at the other, you’re spoiled for choice in the Eden Valley. Bike, hike, ride, fish and shoot. Scale a mountain, climb a valley. There are numerous walks from your doorstep. Take the Ullswater steamboat for jaunts round Aira Force, or swan in for Michelin-starred food at Sharrow Bay. Make memories to cherish, picking sun-ripened raspberries or brushing snow from the branches of your hand-picked Christmas tree, felled to order on the Estates. If the limitless supply of natural wonders begin to pall, recharge your adrenalin with quad biking, clay pigeon shooting or even a paintballing spree.
