Live like lords and ladies in achingly beautiful Melmerby Hall, the historic manor house to this dreamy Cumbrian village.

Relive the Golden Age in this stunning country mansion
Throw the house party of a lifetime as you recreate the golden age of English country life. Celebrate in the elegant buttermilk drawing room overlooking the gardens then throw open the doors to the adjoining family room and dance. Gather for dinner by flickering candlelight in the oxblood dining hall and for breakfast in the sunny orangerie overlooking the knot garden. In your wood-panelled library, curl up and lose yourself in a book or nurse a glass of brandy in front of a blazing fire. Ditch screens to catch up over a game in the billiards room.
Gardens and grounds
Spill out onto long lawns for a game of croquet or tennis. Your cobbled courtyard’s a great place to spark up the barbecue; your sunny walled garden an ideal spot to daydream in seclusion. Let children and dogs run free, creating memories of endless days, building dams and dens in your private stretch of woodland that leads down to a tributary of the River Eden. Why not set up targets on your archery lawn or pick sun-sweetened raspberries for tea in the grounds of the estate?
Bedrooms and bathrooms
At night, if you can pull yourself away from the starlight and hooting of owls, choose from the four-poster splendour of the Regency or Victorian bedrooms, the evocative silk drapes of the Chinese room or the privacy of the Jacobean with its own garden entrance. With options for family suites, twins and doubles, everyone’s happy as you sink into blissful sleep under feather duvets encased in Egyptian cotton.
If you can bear to leave...
A short stroll through the manor’s archway takes you to Melmerby village for homemade cakes and scones at the Old Village Bakery. Sup a local brew at the Shepherd’s Inn or potter around La Brocante antiques, Hollberrie’s sumptous homeware and ladies’ clothing, all discreetly squirrelled away behind the rosy sandstone walls. For biking, hiking, riding, sailing, shooting and fishing, strike out into the glorious Lake District and Pennine Hills – they’re all on your doorstep. Then return to the sweet comfort of roaring fires, claw-footed baths and a generous wicker hamper of local delicacies and treats.
