Relive the Golden Age in this nine-bedroom Grade II listed stunning country mansion
Throw the house party of a lifetime as you recreate the golden age of English country life. Celebrate in the elegant buttermilk drawing room overlooking the gardens then throw open the doors to the adjoining family room. Gather for dinner by flickering candlelight in the historic dining hall and for breakfast in the sunny orangerie overlooking the sandstone walled knot garden. In your wood-panelled library, curl up and lose yourself in a book or nurse a glass of brandy in front of a blazing fire. Ditch screens to catch up over a game in the billiards room.
Melmerby Hall is connected to adjoining Stag Cottage via a secret lockable door leading to the sandstone larder and both properties can be rented together as a glorious twelve-bedroom house to accommodate larger groups.
Historic Melmerby Hall was built in the 1400s as defensive Peele tower and has ties to Sir Launcelot in the Arthurian legends. Its “new wing” is the spacious and airy Georgian elevation to the front. The sensitive modernisation of this Grade II listed manor house has brought in crisp and well equipped ensuite bathrooms throughout and a spacious Orangerie to the rear adjoining the kitchen. With 25 acres of well-cared for gardens and private woodland, its own stream, nine beautiful ensuite bedrooms and spacious reception areas, Melmerby Hall is an ideal place to spend time with friends and family.
Melmerby Hall has evolved over generations with the earliest known reference dating back to the 1300s. The present-day dining room, kitchen and rooms above, form the medieval section of Melmerby which is evident in the meter-thick sandstone walls and stone mullion windows. The spectacular dining room still has ancient old meat hooks in the oak beams and an enormous open fire opening through an oak-panelled door to the large breakfasting kitchen.
The Georgian Wing, added in the 18th century, has graceful sash windows, a traditional oak-panelled gentleman’s library with an open log fire, and a formal drawing room echoing back to this era of gracious entertainment. The ground-floor receptions are rounded off with a family living room well equipped for modern entertainment and relaxed afternoons in front of the fire.
Melmerby Hall also has a sandstone larder room, a separate utility room, boot room, back cloakroom and westerly aspect sandstone terraces leading onto the formal gardens and woodland beyond.

Melmerby Hall is set in the foothills of the North Pennines, one of 40 classified Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England. It is within its own sandstone walled grounds, which are entered through an arched gateway at the edge of the village.
The grounds include an archery lawn, walled vegetable gardens, traditional herbaceous borders bordered with gravel paths and a Victorian castle folly at the foot of the lawn. The private forested grounds of 20 acres incorporate a small tributary of the River Eden at the bottom of the glen which is separated from the main gardens by beech hedges. Wellington boots are recommended for families visiting Melmerby Hall!
Melmerby has a Village Bakery and shop which serves fantastic meals and take away coffee and baked goods. We recommend the lovely shop above the Bakery called Upstairs which has a carefully selected and beautifully displayed range of local giftware and fashion. The Shepherd’s Inn Pub in Melmerby also serves great food and local ales. The nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Ousby also have popular local pubs for those seeking a longer walk, cycle ride or a short drive. The Fetherstone Arms in Kirkowald has a great “steak night” on Mondays and “pie night” on Thursdays.
